Welcome to Food Blerg.

My name is Patrick Hanlon. I’m a 23-year-old graduate from Drogheda, Ireland. I spent three years studying Journalism in DCU, graduating in 2011. I’m completely self-taught, self-made and just harbour a passion for food, handed down through family, friends and an active interest in creation.

Some of you may wonder, why did you choose that random name? Well, for a number of reasons. The main one being the phrase blerg, made famous by Liz Lemon (Tina Fey) on the TV show 30 Rock, is hilarious. She uses it when she is fed up, annoyed, angry or disappointed. I find that when I feel like that, it’s when I turn to food the most. Most people may not agree, but when i’m stressed, upset, lonely or bored I tend to make my way to the kitchen and I find such solace and comfort in making a big meal or being creative with a little snack or letting my mind wander and creative juices flow while I try to update or modernise a classic favourite. Maybe it’s the preparation, the warm scents or the excitement of making something from nothing. It’s a relaxant, a calming force!

So I decided to incorporate that into a foodie blog. I toyed with names for a while and went through hundreds of other blogs, especially Irish ones. One think I kept noticing was that people kept using awkward titles. They could be jokes or play-on words. But the result of that is a blog with a name that’s hard to find. I wanted mine to be simple and effective, so I just decided to call it ‘food blog’… with a twist.

Food Blerg is born, enjoy, comment and interact!
